Hauntings

Bloody Jack of Shrewsbury Castle

Shrewsbury Castle, Shrewsbury

Legend set in the 12th century

A feature on a Shropshire holiday park company's website says Shrewsbury Castle, which dates back over a thousand years, is rumoured to hold the ghost of a 12th-century serial killer called Bloody Jack. He was supposedly a castle keeper who lured at least eight women to the castle and murdered them. He was eventually caught, hanged, drawn and quartered, and his head displayed.

The same feature says many people have reported a ghost in the castle grounds dragging a woman's body behind it.

This is a single-source story and no historical record of a keeper called Bloody Jack was found. Walcot Hall's guide separately mentions hauntings at Shrewsbury Castle and Abbey on the town ghost walks without giving details. Treat the killer as unverified legend.

The castle houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum; check opening times.
