Slains and the Start of the 1597 Witch Hunt

Slains parish, near Cruden Bay

March 1597

The 1597 hunt is the least documented of Scotland's five national witch hunts, because it was run by local courts and the records are often missing. About 200 people are believed to have been executed out of at least 400 tried, and Aberdeenshire was one of the areas where it was most frequent.

What survives for Slains is only the note of the request for permission. The names of the accused were not found in the source consulted. The Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database may have fuller entries.
