The Slaughter House, one of Liverpool's older surviving pubs, takes its name from an abattoir that once stood nearby on Drury Lane rather than from any violent event that actually took place on the premises itself, a slightly misleading name that nonetheless suits the pub's considerable reputation for paranormal activity. Staff have long reported dark figures glimpsed at the edge of vision, footsteps on the stairs when the pub is otherwise empty, glasses smashing without cause and a child's laughter echoing from unoccupied corners, along with hair-pulling experienced directly by staff working there.
The pub's reputation was cemented nationally on 28 April 2017, when the television series Most Haunted filmed an episode on the premises. Using a Ouija-style alphabet sheet during the broadcast, host Yvette Fielding's team identified a spirit calling itself Albert Williams, said to have looked after horses in life and possibly to have been pushed down the pub's stairs to his death, a specific and dramatic backstory generated live during the investigation itself.
As with most Most Haunted episodes, this identification rests entirely on the show's own on-camera methods rather than on any documentary record of a real Albert Williams historically connected to the building, and it is recorded here on that basis, an entertaining and specific piece of television-generated lore layered onto a pub that already had its own quieter reputation for strange activity before the cameras ever arrived.
