Folklore & legend

The Kingston St Mary dragon and the boulder

Kingston St Mary, near Taunton

Undated legend

A savage fire-breathing dragon is said to have terrorised the area around Kingston St Mary, north of Taunton, until a champion came forward to tackle it.

The hero rolled a boulder up the hill opposite the dragon's lair and shouted out to the monster. As the dragon emerged with its jaws open, he rolled the boulder down into its mouth and choked it before it could burn him.

The summary I found gives no name for the champion, no date and no precise site for the lair, so this is a bare traditional outline. The same source notes that the parish church tower has a number of unusual carved 'hunky punks', which may be related to the local taste for dragon imagery, though the guide does not claim a connection.
