The account comes from David Newbould of Stocksbridge, quoted in a Spooky Isles collection of South Yorkshire road hauntings. Some time in the 1970s he was driving home through Stainborough after visiting a workmate in Barnsley hospital. As he neared the top of Lowe Lane, heading for Hood Green, he saw the figure of a monk carrying a child on his back across the road.
He said the beam of his headlights shone through the image and that it disappeared when it reached the other side. The inside of his car went icy cold and only returned to normal after he drove away. When he got home his wife asked what was wrong, and he said he had seen a ghost. He was later told that a fatal accident involving a child had happened at that spot many years before, and he added that he was not the only person to have seen a monk around Barnsley and Stocksbridge.
This is a single first-person report with no date more precise than the 1970s, and the accident he mentions is not identified. It sits within a wider local cluster of monk sightings, including the Stocksbridge Bypass, which has its own entry.
