The Ghost Nuns and Soldiers of Trentham

Also known as: Trentham Hall ghosts

Trentham Gardens, Stone Road, Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent

Tales said to date from the 1500s

Trentham, on the southern edge of Stoke-on-Trent, appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Over the centuries the estate has been home to people ranging from nuns to nobles to army recruits.

Investigator Damon Simms writes in a Staffordshire Live feature that as early as the 1500s there were tales of ghost nuns, a phantom horse and rider and apparitions of marching soldiers at Trentham. The feature gives no named witnesses or specific incidents.

The claim that the stories date to the 1500s is the investigator's and no early source is cited, so the date should be treated with caution. The nuns and soldiers do match the estate's known history, but this is a single short report, so it is tagged as such. The pin marks the gardens in general.

Trentham Gardens is a ticketed visitor attraction; some areas free.
