Hauntings

Jock Rankin, the Happy Hangman

Hangman's Close, St John Street, Stirling

18th century; legend told today

Rankin's place in Stirling lore is now bound up with the ghost tour that uses him as its guide, performed by an actor in the role. That makes it harder to separate an older tradition of his haunting from the modern act. Tourist guides say his ghost is still associated with Hangman's Close, which takes its name from the office rather than a documented event on the spot.

No witness account or date is given for a sighting. The entry is here because the association with the close is repeated in local promotional and tourist material, and it is recorded as tradition.
