The Stornoway Maid and the Baptismal Water

Stornoway (Stornvay), Lewis

Reported c. 1695

She took her maid to church the next Lord's day. They sat near the basin and, after a baptism, before the minister finished the last prayer, she took up as much of the water as she could and threw it in the maid's face. The minister and congregation were amazed. She told him afterwards it was to stop the maid seeing visions, and from that time the maid never saw a vision again.

Martin was given the account by the local minister, Mr Morison, in front of several parishioners who knew it to be true. Martin himself, a Protestant, thought it one of Satan's devices to make credulous people esteem holy water. It is a rare early Stornoway record with a named source.
