The Strugglers Inn

Westgate, Lincoln

Undated; connected to public executions at Lincoln Castle into the 19th century

The Strugglers Inn sits on Westgate, just below the walls of Lincoln Castle and close to where public hangings once took place in full view of the town, and its distinctive name is popularly explained as a direct reference to the final, desperate moments of condemned prisoners as they met their fate nearby, a genuinely grim etymology for a building now serving as an ordinary neighbourhood pub.

That grim historical backdrop has attached a general haunted reputation to the pub over the years, with staff and regulars alike describing an uneasy atmosphere at certain times and occasional unexplained noises with no obvious source, though no single detailed haunting account featuring a named figure or a specific date has ever been published for the building itself.

This is best treated as one of Lincoln's many pub-with-atmosphere stories rather than as a well-evidenced case in its own right, honestly thin in narrative detail beyond its genuine and well-documented historical connection to the nearby gallows that gave the pub its memorable name in the first place.

A working pub, open to customers.
