The brown monks of Abbeygate Street

Also known as: Fleetwoods Wine Cellar monk

Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds

Reports 1962, 1967 and 1992

Abbeygate Street runs from the market area of Bury St Edmunds towards the gate of the great Benedictine abbey. According to a talk given by the Suffolk author Robert Halliday and summarised by the Sudbury History Society, brown monks have been seen here, strangely mostly in cellars.

The dated reports he gave were three. In 1962 the proprietor of a shop saw a brown monk in his basement. In 1967 there was another sighting in the cellar of a shop. In 1992 a brown monk appeared in Fleetwoods Wine Cellar after the bar had shut for the night and the room went cold.

The summary is second-hand and does not name witnesses or buildings other than the wine cellar. The setting is a plausible one, since the street ran beside the abbey precinct, and hooded figures in cellars are common in the county's ghost lore. It is treated as a set of single-source reports.
