Hauntings

The faceless lady of Covehithe

St Andrew's church ruins, Covehithe

Recorded 1975; undated

Covehithe stands on the Suffolk coast north of Southwold. Its church, St Andrew's, is a 17th-century building tucked inside the roofless shell of a far larger 14th and 15th-century church.

The haunting is recorded only as a fragment of a tale in Antony D. Hippisley Coxe's Haunted Britain (Pan Books, 1975): the churchyard is said to be haunted at night by the figure of a woman without a face. Nothing else seems to be recorded of who she was or why she is bound to the graveyard.

This is honest to its thinness: one line in one popular book, no date, no witness. The faceless figure is a type found across Britain. It is included as a single-source report and the coastal erosion around Covehithe means the churchyard setting is also changing.
