In a talk to Sudbury Society members in July 2024, local author Robert Halliday ran through a range of Suffolk ghost stories. Among them was the story that the Royal Oak pub in Sudbury was haunted because it was made of the wood from the Sudbury gibbet.
The society's report gives nothing further: no date, no description of what is seen or heard, and no source for the gibbet detail. Timber from gallows or gibbets being reused in buildings is a recurring motif in English folklore, and the story may simply attach the idea to a pub of the right name and age.
It is kept here as a thin single-source tradition, with the exact pub location left at town level because the report does not give an address.
