Mabel Hewitt of the Farmhouse, Horley

The Farmhouse pub, Ladbroke Road, Langshott, Horley

17th century story; pub since 1985

The building dates to 1602 and was known as Hewitt's Farm until it was converted to a pub in October 1985. It stands on Ladbroke Road in the Langshott area of Horley.

The story, as retold by Surrey Live, is that Mabel Hewitt fell in love, was distraught when her beau died, and fell down the staircase and broke her neck in the 17th century. Among the unexplained occurrences are an old section of window set into a wall with Mabel's name carved on it, and a bottle that flew off the wall and hit the bar without breaking, at exactly the point where Mabel is supposed to have landed.

Surrey Live describes her as a friendly ghost. The carved window is the one physical detail, and the sources do not say who carved the name or when. No dated sighting is given, so this stays a traditional pub ghost. The pin is placed on the Langshott area from the street name and is approximate.
