The priest of Reigate Priory

Reigate Priory, Reigate

Undated; priory founded in the twelfth century

Reigate Priory began as a medieval Augustinian house and was closed in the Reformation. The estate then passed to William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham, who rebuilt it as a private residence.

Alec Kingham's Great British Life round up states that the priory supposedly has a twelfth century priest lurking on the premises. No date, witness or place within the building is given, and a fuller story has not turned up in the other pages checked.

It is typical of a haunting that attaches to a religious site because of what it once was. It is entered as a thin traditional report so that the priory is not missing from the county's record.

Reigate Priory Park is open to the public; the house is not generally open.
