Visitors have reported being pushed by invisible hands and seeing dark shadows move through the galleries. One suggestion is that a caretaker who once lived on the premises still watches over the collection he looked after in life. Another points to the objects themselves. The museum holds Hor, an Egyptian mummy given to it in 1888, and it is easy to see why a mummy attracts ghost stories.
The museum also looks after the Helwick lightship, moored as part of its floating exhibits, and investigators have wondered whether the men who crewed her still hang around the vessel. The old Cabinet of Curiosity room is singled out as having a strange presence.
None of these reports is attached to a named witness or a date in the sources found. They are recorded here as the modern ghost lore of a building that, with its mummy and its cursed Devil carving, has more reason than most to collect it.
