Tatton Old Hall

Tatton Old Hall, Tatton Park, Knutsford

Medieval hall; haunting tradition undated

Tatton Park's estate holds two very different buildings that both carry their own ghost stories: the Georgian mansion built for the Egerton family, and the older Tatton Old Hall, a surviving medieval timber-framed building that predates it. The Old Hall's reported haunting centres on a figure remembered as Tom, described in the ghost-hunting circuit as a poacher, and said to single out female visitors in particular during investigations and open evenings.

A second, less developed strand of the tradition involves a maternal or matriarchal figure, seen accompanied by a young girl, reported separately from the Tom sightings. Neither figure is tied to a documented historical individual in the sources available, and both stories circulate mainly through the ghost-hunt and paranormal-investigation events regularly held at the property, which makes this one of the more thinly sourced entries here even though Tatton Old Hall's genuine medieval age gives the tradition some plausibility.

Tatton Old Hall is managed by the National Trust as part of the Tatton Park estate, with entry via the estate's ticketing.
