The Tithe Barn of Havering-atte-Bower

Hall Lane, Havering-atte-Bower

Investigation, 2012

The Tithe Barn's haunting combines an older, undated White Lady tradition with a specific, dated modern investigation, giving this entry two distinct layers of evidence of quite different vintages. The White Lady herself follows the familiar pattern recorded at dozens of sites across this register, an anonymous female figure without an attached name or originating story, her presence reported at the barn for long enough that no one now traces it to any single incident.

In 2012, a formal investigation by the group Essex Ghost Hunters brought considerably more specific, if still informally documented, detail to the site. Investigators reported immediately picking up the presence of a little girl in the area around the barn, a sensed rather than directly witnessed impression typical of the methodology such groups generally employ, alongside a more concrete claimed sighting: a large figure reported in a corner of the barn itself. The investigation also recorded visible orbs, tapping noises, and stones apparently being thrown, a cluster of phenomena consistent with an active poltergeist-style investigation night rather than a single clear apparition.

No formal published report from the 2012 investigation, beyond the general summary traced for this entry, has been consulted directly, and the findings are recorded here as reported rather than independently verified. The Tithe Barn's genuine agricultural history, tithe barns having served for centuries as the physical collection point for a portion of a parish's harvest owed to the church, gives the building an appropriately old and working rural function to sit alongside its reported hauntings.

The building's current use and public accessibility could not be confirmed for this entry.
