Cloggy of Torver

Also known as: Cloggy

Torver

Torver, a small village near Coniston, has a local ghost story attached to its former railway line, the Coniston branch, which closed to passengers in 1958 and left behind the kind of overgrown, disused trackbed that so often becomes the setting for this type of story. The figure attached to it is nicknamed Cloggy, a name taken directly from the distinctive sound of wooden clogs said to be heard along the old track bed by those who have walked it since the line closed.

No name, date, or documented history behind the figure has been traced for this entry beyond the nickname itself, leaving Cloggy defined entirely by a single characteristic sound rather than by any fuller backstory or identity.

It is recorded here as a slight, thinly evidenced piece of local railway-ghost tradition, exactly the kind of story that tends to attach itself naturally to a disused, atmospheric route once the trains themselves have stopped running and the line has been left to nature and to memory.

The former railway line is now largely a public path.
