Belville House, in Brockagh near Dungannon, dates from the 17th century and carries a legend tied to a former resident, Lady Morris. She is said to have taken her own life in the house, and her ghost was believed to haunt it for years. A plaque on the building still bears the Morris family crest.
According to local lore, a priest eventually exorcised her restless spirit and trapped it in a bottle. Where the bottle went is a mystery. Some say it lies hidden in the attic of Belville House, while others insist it was buried in the grounds of Mountjoy Castle nearby. Spirited Isle says that castle was built by Lord Mountjoy in 1602 and is said to be connected to Belville by secret passageways, though no historical record or survey confirms them. Spooky Isles says she is a former owner of the house who hung herself in the 17th century.
The spirit-in-a-bottle idea is a recurring Irish and Ulster legend, usually with the bottle buried or walled up so it can never be disturbed. Mountjoy Castle's own history is real, but the Lady Morris story has no source beyond local telling.
