Weddington Castle was a country house on the northern edge of Nuneaton, built up gradually over centuries from an older manor before finally being pulled down in 1928, its demolition ending a long story of continuous occupation and expansion that had shaped the estate over many generations. During excavation work carried out at the site, a long-forgotten cellar was found to contain a badly decomposed skeleton, and this genuinely unsettling discovery has since been tied to reports of a hostile 'lady in black' who has shown ill will toward people living in the area today, taken by some who tell the story as the unquiet remains of whoever ended up in that cellar, possibly the victim of a killing carried out in the old castle's dungeons.
A stranger and considerably more recent account, recorded by a local historian, describes a boy named David French and several of his friends seeing three ghostly figures riding old-fashioned bicycles roughly twenty feet or more above the ground, drifting along in a manner none of the witnesses could explain or account for at the time.
Separately, the last licensee of a building on the estate known as the Grove reported hearing footsteps in corridors at night after the rest of the household had gone to bed, a much more conventional haunting compared to the floating cyclists. None of these three stories obviously connect to one another beyond sharing the same patch of ground, and they are recorded here exactly as they were found, as loosely related local reports rather than as one single, unified haunting.
