The ghost horse of Dale Hill

Dale Hill, between Pyecombe and Poynings

Murder undated; sighting in the 20th century

Peter Benner recalls that his late father-in-law, Ronald Kenyon, believed he saw a ghostly horse crossing the road in front of him when returning at dusk from Brighton to Horsham, at Dale Hill between Pyecombe and Poynings.

Benner says this was undoubtedly the horse of Brewer Griffith of Brighton, who was murdered by robbers near the spot and whose horse was turned loose. He adds that, like many other hauntings, researchers have associated this spot with ley lines radiating from Wolstonbury Hill.

The sighting is a first-hand family anecdote with no date, and the murder of Griffith is not dated or documented in the source. The ley line link is a later idea and not a witness detail. The pin is an estimate for the road at Dale Hill.
