The Crawling Man of Chantry Bridge, Wakefield

Also known as: Wakefield Bridge ghost

Chantry Bridge, Wakefield

Undated

Chantry Bridge is a medieval bridge over the River Calder in Wakefield. Work began on the stone structure in 1342, and the Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin on a small island in the middle was consecrated in 1356. The bridge is Grade I listed and was bypassed by Wakefield New Bridge in 1933.

The Wakefield Express, in a 2024 Halloween list that draws on the Paranormal Database, says that a figure reportedly crawls near the bridge where he fell, breaking his legs. A search summary of other material describes the man as having tried to take his own life on the bridge and as dying later of his injuries. That fuller version was not seen at source, so it is not treated as established here.

No date, name or witness is attached to either version, and the Wakefield Express does not identify who fell. The record is a thin traditional ghost tied to a famous landmark.

Bridge and chapel exterior can be visited freely; chapel open on set days.
