Whistle Binkies has run as a basement live music venue on South Bridge for years, packed most nights with bands and audiences who, by most accounts, have far more pressing things to watch than an empty spot near the bar. Even so, a consistent figure has been reported there since the venue opened: a quiet man in a long, dark coat with tails, standing near the bar, watched more than watching, which is presumably how he earned the name staff and regulars use for him — the Watcher.
He is described as passive rather than threatening, simply present, dozens of reported sightings over the years without any accompanying account of aggression or disturbance of the kind reported at some of the venue's Old Town neighbours. The single most striking detail attached to him is one specific incident in which witnesses describe him walking calmly through the bar and then directly through an adjoining wall, the closest thing to hard evidence of his supernatural nature in an otherwise fairly ordinary ghost story. No name or historical identity has been attached to him in the sources consulted for this record.
