The Grey Lady of the East Side School

East side of Whitby

Reported late 1970s to early 1980s

Whitby has more than one Grey Lady story circulating locally, and this is the thinnest and most recent of them by some distance: reports from the late 1970s and early 1980s of a grey-clad figure causing disturbances at a primary school on the east side of the town, a considerably more modern and mundane setting than the abbey ruins and clifftop churchyard associated with the town's other, older Grey Lady traditions.

The specific school itself is not identified anywhere in the sources available for this entry, and the nature of the disturbances is not spelled out in any detail beyond the figure's presence being felt or glimpsed by staff and pupils over what appears to have been an extended period of time.

Given the genuine vagueness of the location and the lack of any named building or individual behind the story, this sits firmly at the thin end of what is worth recording at all. But it is a genuine, repeated local report from a specific and relatively recent period rather than an invented tale conjured from nothing, so it is included here honestly flagged as under-documented rather than left out entirely.
