Bewdley Bridge: Midnight Hooves and the Woman in the Shawl

Bewdley Bridge and riverside, Bewdley

Undated; modern listing

Bewdley Bridge crosses the River Severn at the foot of the town and was designed by Thomas Telford. It lies at the edge of the Wyre Forest.

The only published account found is a one-line entry in Spooky Isles' list of haunted places in the West Midlands, which says hooves are heard on the bridge at midnight with no horse to be seen, and that a woman in a shawl stares into the Severn and disappears when approached.

Without a named witness, a date or an identity for the woman, this is a thin report. It is included because it is the standing local tradition for the bridge, with the usual river-crossing motifs of a phantom horse and a woman at the water, and it is tagged accordingly.
