The Murenger stands out on Newport's High Street as one of the very few buildings that look older than the Victorian town. The murenger was the town officer responsible for collecting murage, the toll used to maintain the walls, and the house is said to have been his.
Its ghost is simply a man seen on the upper floor. The Great British Ghost Tour asks whether he is the ghost of a man who took his own life in the building. No name, date or record is given.
The pub has been closed and reopened several times. The story is recorded here as a single-source tradition.
