One member of the church objected to his entry to a school of divinity on the ground that his learning came from the devil. The boy later became the Rev. John Brown of Haddington, Professor of Divinity and author of a self-interpreting Bible. The paper gives sources for his life by Butler, Mackenzie and Brown, and uses the case to show belief in witchcraft outliving the 1736 repeal.
