Most phantom coaches have no history. This one is given a date. According to the Great British Ghost Tour, a coach came to grief at Ancre Hill on a stormy night in 1850, and three people died. No names are given, and a contemporary report has not been found, though a crash of that kind would likely have been covered by the Monmouthshire Beacon or the Monmouthshire Merlin.
What is said to happen now is a full replay. On stormy nights the coach is seen again, careering down the hill, and it strikes a wall exactly as the real one did. The story does not say whether the sound is heard or whether anyone has seen the passengers.
In Rockfield village, a short distance away, there is a second vehicle ghost: a hearse that appears before a death in the village. The source gives no details beyond that.
