The Angel Hotel, Market Harborough

High Street, Market Harborough

Building dates to the 18th century; haunting undated

The Angel Hotel has stood on Market Harborough's High Street since the eighteenth century, old enough to rank as one of only two surviving historic coaching inns in the town, alongside its slightly older neighbour, the Three Swans. Local round-ups of Harborough's ghost stories consistently place the two inns together, naming both as reputedly haunted in the same breath, the pair of them treated almost as a matched set of the town's classic haunted coaching houses.

Where the comparison breaks down is in the detail. The Three Swans carries its own specific, developed story, but no equivalent account has survived for the Angel beyond the bare claim of haunting itself: no named ghost, no particular witness, no single incident that later writers have been able to hang a fuller story on. It appears in every list, but always as the shorter entry, its reputation apparently borrowed as much from standing next to its more storied neighbour on the same historic street as from any independent tradition of its own.

That is worth stating plainly rather than papering over. The Angel Hotel is recorded here as a genuinely old and historically real building, repeatedly named as haunted in local sources, but honestly thin on the kind of developed individual story that would let a fuller account be written with any confidence. Sometimes a place earns its place in a record like this simply by persistently being named, even when nobody can quite say by what, or by whom.

The Angel Hotel operates as a private hotel.
