The cross is undated but is thought to have been put up by the Campbells of Auchmannoch in the 19th century, and the 1258 date refers to the grant of the lands to Melrose Abbey, or possibly the discovery of the well. Wikipedia notes that the Ordnance Survey records the tradition of the Queen's halt at a nearby stream, but that it may not be reliable. The coordinates are approximate.
