The Girl Whipped by the Fairies near Ballasalla

Mountain road near Ballasalla, Malew

A girl of about ten was sent by her parents from their home near Ballasalla to fetch tobacco from the town. Her way took her over the mountain. On the top, she found herself surrounded by a crowd of little men.

Some of them wanted to carry her off. One of them stood up for her and would not allow it, and they fell to quarrelling. In the end two or three of the others, angry at being crossed, took hold of her and whipped her hard before letting her go.

When she got home her back was covered in marks like the prints of very small hands. People from the town went up to the place she described and found blood on the stones. That, for those who told the story, settled the matter.
