Ballechin House, 'The Most Haunted House in Scotland'

Also known as: The Alleged Haunting of B---- House

Ballechin House site, near Grandtully

First reported haunting 1876; investigation 1897; house demolished 1963

Wikipedia gives the outline: the Major (1806 to 1876) inherited in 1834, returned from India in 1850 and lived with his dogs, and was gossiped about with his much younger housekeeper, who died in 1873. The first reported haunting, in 1876, came from a maid. The house was known as the most haunted in Scotland, with an apparition of a nun compared to the Borley Rectory case.

In 1897 John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, organised an investigation with Society for Psychical Research helpers, including Ada Goodrich Freer. Their journal was published in 1899 as The Alleged Haunting of B---- House. Critics rejected it: a guest wrote to The Times that there was no evidence, and Frederic Myers doubted anything supernormal had happened. See the separate record on the investigation for the dispute.

The main house was demolished in 1963; the location given is approximate and the site is private estate land.
