The Prophecies of the Black Nun

Also known as: Black Nun's prophecies

Bonamargy Friary and Ballycastle

Told since the nineteenth century

Spirited Isle lists several prophecies attributed to Julia McQuillan. She is said to have said the river at Ballycastle would one day run red, and centuries later a workman fell into the river and was dragged through a waterwheel, and the water in that section was said to run red with his blood. She is said to have foretold that two standing stones four miles apart would be united, and years later the stones were brought together and set side by side at a pier in Ballycastle harbour.

Another prophecy was that a red-haired priest would drown at Pans Rocks, which many believe came true in 1940 with the death of Father James McCann. She is also said to have spoken of strange inventions not yet imagined, which later listeners read as horseless carriages on roads and iron vessels crossing the sea.

As with most prophecy traditions, the fulfilments are told after the event, and the earliest written form of each prediction has not been traced.
