Brian Wood's Panther Patrol, Bathgate Hills

Also known as: Beast of West Lothian

Boghall and the Bathgate Hills

March to July 1997

The May 1997 article says Wood, 32, first saw the animal in March near playing fields at Boghall, and that it jumped a six foot fence. It was more than four feet long and about three feet high. He set up a panther patrol with a torch, a camera and three dogs. He said he found two paw prints in a field and panther hairs on a tree trunk nearby. SSPCA inspectors said big cat sightings were more common near the Pentland Hills but a beast could wander further afield.

The July 1997 piece says he met the animal one April evening while walking his dogs, that it leaped a six foot fence and disappeared into the Bathgate Hills, and that he then devoted his free time to hunting it. It says his fiancee thought him obsessed and experts and police were sceptical. He was still searching. The pin is at Boghall and is approximate.
