The Crown Bar: Amelia and Patrick Flanagan

Crown Liquor Saloon, Great Victoria Street, Belfast

Undated

The Crown Liquor Saloon began as the Railway Tavern in the early nineteenth century. In 1885 Patrick Flanagan renamed it the Crown Bar and gave it the Victorian snugs, carving, stained glass and gas lamps that survive.

Spirited Isle reports that it is believed haunted by a woman who died after falling down the stairs many years ago. She is called Amelia, and the story says she was a prostitute and that nobody knows whether she tripped or was pushed. The ghost of a man, believed to be Flanagan himself, is said to return now and then to watch over the pub he created.

No date, witness or newspaper report has been found for either story.

The Crown Bar is a working public house.
