The Man in the Cloak on Queen's Bridge

Queen's Bridge, Belfast

Undated, probably late nineteenth or early twentieth century

Many years ago, a man saw a gentleman in a long black cloak standing on Queen's Bridge staring down into the water. He turned to a friend to point him out, and when they looked again the man was gone. Fearing he had jumped, they ran to the parapet and saw no sign of him in the water, and they told a police constable, who said several people had recently reported the same man on the same spot, and that each time he vanished.

The two men worked at the shipyard. They asked their colleagues if they had seen anything, and were not taken seriously, until a few weeks later when another employee saw the same figure. A policeman also saw it, kept watch for five minutes and then saw the man leap from the bridge. Again there was no evidence that anyone had entered the water.
