Donnington Castle, a 14th century fortified house, was besieged for nearly two years in the Civil War and held for the King until 1646. Parliament then voted for its demolition, and the gatehouse survives.
Berkshire History lists several apparitions. A woman in green appears at the gates and asks visitors why they are closed, possibly Lady Hoby. A guard stands under the west gate, seen by one visitor but not her companion. Candlelight passes the windows of the locked gatehouse late at night. Campers saw a bearded cavalier restraining a screaming young woman before both vanished. A white animal that went down a bank and disappeared was reported in summer 1990, and a Royalist patrol ambushed by Parliamentary troops is said to be replayed in Love Lane.
Other directories repeat the white dog and the guard. The account is a collection of separate stories, almost all undated,. The ruins are also recorded separately as a monument, and this entry covers the hauntings only. It is tagged as traditional.
