Hauntings

The screaming tunnel at Shaw House

Shaw House, Church Road, Shaw, Newbury

Undated

Shaw House is an Elizabethan mansion on the edge of Newbury, with Civil War history. Berkshire History says mysterious blue lights show in its attic and upper windows.

It also reports screams at midnight from a tunnel said to run to Donnington Castle, and attributes them to a maid killed when the tunnel collapsed. Spooky Isles repeats flickering lights, shadows and sudden unearthly screams at the house.

Underground passages between houses and castles are a very common legend and are rarely found. No date for the maid's death is given, so this is kept as a traditional report.
