The Plant That Kept the Visions Away

Berneray (Bernera of Harris)

Reported c. 1695

Martin was allowed to feel the plant through the cloth of the coat but Morison would by no means let him open the seam, even for a reward. Fuga daemonum, 'the demon's flight', is an old Latin name for a plant used in charms against evil, sometimes applied to St John's wort.

The account sits in the second-sight chapter beside cures by prayer and holy water. Morison appears to have regarded the gift as a burden to be switched off. Other seers in Martin's accounts also tried to rid themselves of it.
