The Sea Maiden Herding Cows at Struth, Obbe

Struth, Obbe (Leverburgh), Harris

Recorded in the 19th century

The song names cows from Tiree, Barra, Islay and Arran and from green Kintyre, and calls them each by name, with a warning that certain cows would be lost. It is a herding call, and, like Campbell's account from Luskentyre, it ties the belief in sea cattle to this part of Harris. Carmichael gives it in Gaelic with a translation.

Obbe is the old name of the place now called Leverburgh. This is a separate local record to the one from Luskentyre, from the same stretch of coast, and shows how widely the tradition was held.
