Hauntings

Bishop's House, Windhill

Also known as: Handscombe's Department Store

Windhill, Bishop's Stortford

Traditional

Bishop's House at Windhill has one of the more concrete pieces of physical evidence behind any haunting in this register: an actual discovery of human bones, found hidden beneath an old cupboard inside the building during works or a clearout at some undocumented point in its history. Given the building's long-standing reputation for poltergeist activity, strange noises, and a resident Grey Lady seen walking up the stairs and along the hallways late at night, the bones were given a proper burial specifically in the hope that doing so would put an end to the disturbances.

According to the accounts collected for this entry, that attempt did not work. Loud crashes and the sound of running feet continue to be reported in the building when it is known to be empty, and the Grey Lady is said to still roam the corridors much as before. No identity has been established for either the bones or the Grey Lady herself, and it is not clear from the sources whether the two are meant to be connected, the bones belonging to the same figure whose ghost still walks, or an entirely separate discovery that simply happened to be made in an already haunted building.

The combination of genuine physical evidence, in the form of the bones, with an ongoing, apparently unresolved haunting despite a proper burial being carried out, makes Bishop's House a somewhat unusual case within this register, where most reburial stories describe the haunting successfully ending once the remains are dealt with. Here, whatever the explanation, the activity is said to have simply continued.
