Hauntings

The George, Bishop's Stortford

North Street, Bishop's Stortford

Traditional

The George on North Street has operated at various points as both a pub and, more recently, a hotel, and its ghost stories reflect both phases of its working life. The most consistently reported activity centres on Room 27, where guests brave enough to stay describe the unsettling feeling of being watched and a grey mist that hovers over the bed.

The room's most detailed single account describes a guest who walked in to find the figure of a woman in a grey dress bent over the bed, her arms raised as if in pain or distress. The guest cried out in shock, and the figure disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. No identity or documented history has been attached to this figure, and it is not established whether she is connected to any specific tragedy that took place in the building.

From the building's earlier life as a working pub, further reports survive of a white mass seen hovering in the basement, and of something, never identified, that would regularly and inexplicably turn off the beer gas supply, a detail that, while less dramatic than a full apparition, is the kind of small, repeated, practically inconvenient occurrence that often features in accounts from pub and hotel staff who have to deal with it on a daily basis rather than as a one-off encounter.
