The Phantom Boat of Black Head

Also known as: Ghaw kione doo; The pirate's treasure cave

Black Head, near the Sound, Rushen

A pirate, the story goes, used a sea cave at Ghaw kione doo, the creek of Black Head, near the Sound, to hide what he had taken. When he left on his last voyage he put one of his crew in the cave to guard it. The pirate never came back, lost at sea or hanged, nobody knew. The man waited in the cave for years and then disappeared himself, and people supposed he had died in there.

Long afterwards, an old fisherman was out near the cave and saw a boat come past him, rowed by six men in red caps. They pulled straight into the mouth of the cave. Curious, he followed them in. The cave had only one entrance and he had not taken his eyes off it, but when he got inside there was no boat and there were no men.

The cave is in sea cliffs and is only reachable by boat; the coastal path passes above.
