Table turning was a parlour game with a serious edge in the 1920s and 1930s, when spiritualism was at its height after the First World War. Families sat round a table with their hands on it and asked questions, and the table answered with knocks or tilts.
In Blackwood, in the Sirhowy valley, one family found the game went further than they wanted. According to the Great British Ghost Tour's summary of Alan Roderick, in September 1932 the table they had used began to levitate and move around the room with force, and knocking sounds were heard. The house is not identified.
The same source records a separate haunting in a house on Bedwellty Road, Cefn Fforest, where a frighteningly ugly old woman appeared in one of the bedrooms and tapped a ring by the side of the bed. No date is given.
A third local story from the same page concerns the Maes Manor Hotel on Maesrudded Hill, which the South Wales Argus reported as haunted in the early 1990s, but no details of that ghost are given.
