The art deco BBC building on Whiteladies Road was built for the corporation and opened in 1934. Over the decades it housed radio studios, regional television production and editing suites.
Spooky Bristol describes a 1980s legend of a mischievous force: lights flickering, recording equipment failing mid-broadcast, audio mysteriously dropping out and whole systems crashing in live shows. Some staff half-seriously blamed the supernatural and claimed to sense a presence in empty studios or hear footsteps in deserted corridors, giving rise to the nickname Broadcast Bogeyman. Bristol24/7 also records that the many breakdowns and interruptions of the 1980s were put down to a poltergeist.
