The Shocked Lady of Purdown

Also known as: Pur Down rider

Purdown, Stapleton

Undated

Purdown, or Pur Down, is a hill above the Frome valley in north Bristol, now a park.

HauntedHosts lists a ghost called the Shocked Lady. According to local legend as told there, she died out riding when she was struck by a sudden bolt of lightning, and her body was found by onlookers. Riders and walkers claim to have seen her galloping by.

There is no date, no name for the woman and no named witness, and the entry is probably a retelling of a tradition with the usual features of a riding accident ghost. It is recorded as a thin traditional story.
