The Black Lady of Broomhill House, Larkhall

Broomhill House site and Morgan Glen, Larkhall

Legend; one version dates the story to about 1902

The two versions disagree on the captain's name, and the name Sita Phurdeen appears only in the more recent retelling, so it should be treated with care. Nothing in the sources gives a record of a marriage, a death or a disappearance. What the story does preserve is a colonial-era discomfort about a woman treated as a stranger in her own home, and the local tradition of a woman in black seen at the house's windows. The house has since fallen into disrepair and the pin is set at its recorded site.
