Penydarren, on the eastern side of Merthyr, grew up around the Penydarren ironworks, where Richard Trevithick ran the world's first steam railway locomotive in 1804. Its terraced streets are the setting for one of the domestic hauntings shared on the Old Merthyr Tydfil forum.
The household in Brynheulog Street reported a familiar list. Objects vanished and were found somewhere else. Water disappeared from a fish tank without any leak. The smell of pipe smoke drifted through the house though nobody living there smoked a pipe. Most oddly, belongings were found stacked up in piles that no member of the family had made.
Pipe smoke is often read in such stories as the sign of a former occupant, usually an old man, but the post does not identify anyone. It is a single, informal family account.
