The limping priest of Chenies Manor

Chenies Manor House, Chenies

Undated; house begun 1460

Chenies Manor is a Grade I listed Tudor house begun in 1460, held by the Russell family and Earls of Bedford from 1526 until 1954. Ghost listings describe a limping priest there, dragging one foot, and heavy footsteps with a softer limping sound.

The house has a reputed priest hole, and Wikipedia notes graffiti in the medieval undercroft that suggests it was used as a prison during the Civil War. Neither is tied to the priest by any source read here, and Wikipedia mentions no haunting.

The priest has no name, date or witness in the listings. The pairing with a priest hole is natural but unproven, so this stays a traditional tale.
