No collector, date or informant is named in the article, and the story does not appear in Martin's account of the stones. It is a single-source tradition with a modern feel, and it is quite possible it was shaped by later writing about the site. It is included because it is widely repeated about the stones, but it should be read with caution. The cuckoo has older associations in the Hebrides, for example as a death omen on Rona in Martin's account, though that has no known link to this tale.
